Application Procedures, General Information and Requirements

1.

Review the information outlined on this page and on the Salary, Experience and Education Requirements page.

Review the Position Titles and Announcement Numbers page and then review the Position Briefs page for a detailed description of the position.

 

3.

You can apply for as many positions for which you are qualified. You must submit a separate application for each position you are applying for.

 

4.

The DOL Online Opportunities Recruitment System (DOORS) is an automated E-Recruit system that enables applicants to apply for DOL jobs electronically. It is fully integrated with USAJOBS and offers applicants a wide variety of tools to assist managing the job search process. It is a user-friendly system which provides applicants with timely notices of job opportunities.

If you are a first time user, you will need to create a NEW Career Center Account by establishing a USER ID and Password. If you have already established a USAJOBS account you may skip the registration process.

Creating an Account and Building Your Resume

  • Bring up the USAJOBS page at www.usajobs.com
  • Click on "USAJOBS"
  • When the page appears, click on 'Create your Account Now!'
  • Complete the fields that are displayed.
  • Click 'Submit' when finished. You will now be taken to the Resume Builder. The first tab highlighted will be 'Getting Started'.
  • There are 4 tabs that you will need to complete to build your resume:
        1. Getting Started
        2. Experience
        3. Related Information
        4. Finishing Up

At any time in the process, you can click on the "?" after each title to obtain additional information.

Once you have completed the online registration and built your resume, you must return to the Department of Labor's website at www.jobs.dol.gov to continue with the application process. Click on DOL Summer Employment Program and search for the position(s) you wish to be considered.

Click on the position, scroll down to the bottom of the vacancy announcement. Click the "Apply on-line" button at the bottom of the page to proceed with submitting your application.

If you currently are not logged into USAJOBS you will be asked to login.

Select the resume you want to submit for the announcement. Click the "Apply for this Position Now!" button.

You will be taken to the DOORS transition screen. DOORS will step you through the application process. Be sure to answer all required questions designated by a red asterisk (*).

 

12.

After completing the application, you will be given the opportunity to review your responses to the questions. To submit your application, click the "Finished" button at the bottom of the page.

 

13.

USAJOBS will provide an electronic confirmation that your application has been submitted.

 

14.

Applicants must submit a copy of the most recent transcript in order to be considered for DOL summer jobs. Student copies are acceptable. Please fax transcript or proof of enrollment to DOL Summer Employment Coordinator, at (202) 693-7729.

 

15.

Your application and required supplemental information must be submitted by midnight Eastern Standard Time (EST) on the closing date of the announcement.

   

Citizenship
All positions require United States citizenship.

 

Minimum Age Requirements
You must be at least 16 years of age at the time you report for work.

 

Student Status Requirement
Unless otherwise indicated in the job brief, you must be a student in order to apply for these positions. A student is an individual who is enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) seeking student and is taking at least a half-time academic/vocational/or technical course load in an accredited high school, technical or vocational school, 2 year or 4 year college or university, graduate or professional school. The definition of half-time is the definition provided by the school in which the student is enrolled.

 

Military Draft Registration
Male applicants between the ages of 18 and 25 must be registered with the Selective Service System.

 

Travel Expenses
Applicants for summer employment are responsible for all expenses related to travel, housing and all expenses that may occur while seeking employment.
