PROBLEM TO BE ADDRESSED

The three regions that comprise the Afghanistan border of Pakistan—the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), the Northwest Frontier Province (NWFP), and Bulachistan—are plagued by chronic unemployment that threatens their social and economic stability. A pronounced degree of underinvestment has left these areas with high unemployment rates, low skill levels, and lax worker rights protections.

TARGETS

Unemployed workers and potential entrepreneurs.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

  • Provide demand-driven vocational and entrepreneurial training; and
  • Educate workers about their rights and new entrepreneurs about the rights of their employees.

SUMMARY OF ACTIVITIES

1) Develop vocational, apprenticeship, and entrepreneurial skills training curricula based on the results of labor market surveys, and provide post-training counseling and support.

2) Develop a system to match skilled workers with employment opportunities and provide access to micro-financing for newly trained entrepreneurs.

3) Develop curricula and instruction techniques that provide an understanding of fundamental worker rights as well as federal and local laws, and integrate worker rights training with the delivery of vocational and entrepreneurial training.
