Problem to be Addressed

Lack of national data on the extent of child labor in Malawi impedes the creation of effective intervention policies.

Project Objectives

Development Objective: The program will contribute to the collection of reliable data to support effective interventions against child labor.

  • At the end of the program, quantitative and qualitative data on child labor will have been produced, processed, analyzed and disseminated.

Summary of Activities

Research design: A comprehensive Child Labor Survey, using a stand-alone approach. A total of 8,000 households will be selected using a two stage stratified cluster sampling.

  • Collect information on the character, nature, size and reasons for child labor, and determine the conditions of work and their effects on the health, education and normal development of the working child;
  • Increase the capacity of the Malawi Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training and National Statistics Office to collect quantitative information;
  • Create policies and action programs for the elimination of child labor.
