Problem to be Addressed |
Four decades of war have disrupted all aspects of life in Angola. The country’s infrastructure is severely damaged, especially the government and social structures that protected children and their families. Although the war in Angola has ended, its aftereffects continue to exact a harsh toll on children. The lack of education, and more specifically safe schooling, makes children susceptible to being involved in private and commercial farms and mines. Poverty is the driving force behind children’s inability to attend school, leaving them vulnerable to the worst forms of child labor (WFCL). In 2005, United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) reported that 22 percent of children in Angola between the ages of 5 and 14 were engaged in some form of labor. |
