Problem to be Addressed

Child labor, often in hazardous conditions, is a problem in Yemen due to factors including extreme poverty, the poor quality of education, and high formal-sector unemployment.

Results

The project withdrew 2,604 children and prevented 1,330 children from work in urban and rural areas, including street children.

Project Objectives

Contribute to the elimination of exploitive child labor in Yemen.

Intermediate objectives include:

  • Develop a National Policy and Program Framework to combat the worst forms of child labor, taking concrete measures toward harmonizing Yemen’s child labor and education legislation with international standards;
  • Strengthen capacity to withdraw children from hazardous work, monitor workplaces and provide social protection through training for staff of relevant partners and through the development of partnerships at the national level and in selected sectors and areas;
  • Withdraw and rehabilitate working children from the worst forms of child labor and provide them with education or vocational program; and
  • Raise awareness among employers, families, national/local authorities, communities and general public of the problem of child labor and its negative consequences; further, mobilize action against child labor.

Summary of Activities

  • Withdrew and rehabilitated children engaged in hazardous work by mainstreaming them into regular formal or non-formal educational programs and providing them with health services, counseling and recreational activities; 
  • Assisted families of former child workers with social protection measures, including alternative income generation;
  • Trained labor inspectors to investigate and monitor situations of child labor and educators to coordinate activities that combat and prevent child labor;
  • Conducted research and surveys, established databases, and provided consultation on policy and program issues; and
  • Raised awareness and mobilized employers, families, national and local authorities, communities and the general public on the issue of child labor and its negative consequences.
