Project Title

Addressing Child Labor Through Quality Education for All in Pakistan (ACL-QEFA)

Problem to be Addressed

The project addressed the following barriers in the formal education system that hindered access to basic education for working children: 1) lack of knowledge on children's education; 2) irrelevant curriculum; 3) inadequately trained teachers with low motivation; and 4) limited access to quality vocational education.

Results

The project withdrew 11,332 children and prevented 3,954 children from hazardous work in various sectors.  These included carpet weaving, leather tannery, shoe manufacturing, automobile workshops, brick kilns, and agriculture.  The project targeted the Sheikhupura and Kasur districts in the province of Punjab.

Project Objectives

Contribute to the reduction of child labor in Pakistan:
Intermediate objectives include:

  • Reduce child labor in Sheikhupura and Kasur districts in Punjab province;
  • Increase local and national commitment to support concrete actions that reduce child labor and promote school enrollment and retention; and
  • Strengthen education systems that reduce child labor, promote school enrollment and retention, and integrate child laborers into education settings.

Summary of Activities

  • Developed and implemented communication and advocacy strategies for increased awareness of the hazards of child labor;
  • Mobilized local and expatriate communities to support the project;
  • Provided increased access to non-formal and formal education as well as pre-vocational and vocational training for working and at-risk children; and
  • Increased capacity of district government education bodies and NGOs to provide quality education for all children in the two targeted districts.
