Problem to be Addressed

Trafficking in children for commercial sexual exploitation in Nepal.

Results

The project withdrew 120 children from exploitation as victims of trafficking. The priority target group was girls of 12-14 years of age. 

Project Objectives

  • At the end of the project, government capacity to develop policy and strategies to combat child trafficking at the national level will have been strengthened; and
  • At the end of the project, government and NGO capacity will have been strengthened to implement action programs to prevent child trafficking and provide protection to victims.

Summary of Activities

  • Developed mechanism for institutional capacity building;
  • Prepared national plan of action against trafficking in children and commercial sexual exploitation;
  • Strengthened legislation and enforcement procedures;
  • Built awareness of the problem among parents, local communities, media and policy makers;
  • Conducted action-oriented research on commercial sexual exploitation;
  • Sensitized and mobilized 10 village development committees against child trafficking; and
  • Rescued and rehabilitated 120 girls from trafficking and assisted them in setting up their own businesses.
