Problem to be Addressed

Child domestic service is deeply ingrained in the cultural and traditional structure of Haitian society, constituting a fundamental element of the relationship between rural and urban populations. Child domestics are one of the most vulnerable and exploited populations in the country.

Results

The project withdrew 153 children from exploitive domestic labor. The geographic regions of the project included the nine departments of Haiti: Artibonite, Centre, Grand’Anse, Nord, Nord-Est, Nord-Ouest, Ouest, Sud, and Sud-Est.

Project Objectives

Development Objective:
To contribute to the prevention and progressive elimination of child domestic work in Haiti.

Immediate Objectives:

  • Develop the government’s institutional capacity to take steps to prevent and progressively eliminate child domestic work in Haiti, and to rehabilitate former child domestic workers;
  • Improve understanding on child labor, and analyze and utilize intervention strategies; and
  • Assist at least 150 former child domestics through rehabilitative services, education, or other direct assistance.

Summary of activities

  • Initiated the process of creating a national plan of action against child labor;
  • Raised awareness about the issue of child labor among NGOs, the media, and other key actors;
  • Collected qualitative and quantitative information on child domestic service;
  • Conducted rapid assessments of child labor in agriculture and the commercial sex industry; and
  • Implemented direct action projects to withdraw and rehabilitate child workers.
