Problem to be Addressed

The general unemployment rate is 6%, However the rate for persons with disabilities (PWDs) jumps to 26 % and of these 67% have been looking for work for over a year. Some have even estimated the rate of unemployment for PWDs is as high as 85%.

Project Objectives

  • Increased employer awareness about the laws regarding job placement with PWDs.
  • Increased PWDs access to training, including information technology (IT) programs using adaptive technology.
  • Increased capacity of local organizations to provide case management of PWDs training and job placement.

Summary of Activities

  • Develop outreach campaign, in coordination with the Ministry of Labor, to target employers and inform them of the tax benefits related to hiring of PWDs.
  • Increase accessibility to existing training programs for PWDs.
  • Train local organizations to link provide computer training using adaptive technology, or other job training programs as appropriate.
  • Link to or provide IT and other job training for PWDs.
  • Conduct outreach to employers to inform them about the training programs, government incentives and job referrals.
  • Provide follow-up to PWDs and employers.
  • Link to systems to help find job openings as well as track trainees and job placement.
