Problem to be Addressed

Although the country has specific laws in place to protect workers, most workers lack the knowledge, ability and tools to exercise their rights.

Targets

The project targets workers in select agricultural communities (Los Amates, el Estor, Puerto Barrios) in the Department of Izabal, including indigenous populations.

Project Objectives

Improve labor law compliance in targeted agricultural communities through:

  • Increased ability of workers in targeted communities to exercise their labor rights.
  • Increased awareness among workers and employers in targeted communities about national labor laws.
  • Systems implemented in targeted communities /workplaces to improve labor law compliance and working conditions.

Summary of Activities

  • Establish Worker Rights Centers (WRCs) to provide legal information to agricultural workers (Opened two centers May 2009).
  • Strengthen local networks for replication and dissemination of labor rights information.
  • Provide relevant and quality labor rights information and legal assistance to workers at Worker Rights Centers (Served over 400 cases).
  • Use a variety of outreach methods to bring information about labor rights to workers in the places where they work and congregate.
  • Develop a Security and Risk Management Plan for project staff and beneficiaries accessing the project services.
