The USDOL/ILO SHARE (Strategic HIV/AIDS Responses in Enterprises) began in 2001 and has received $2 million from the US Labor Department and additional funding as part of the PEPFAR or President’s Emergency Plan For AIDS Relief team in India.

Problem to be Addressed

UNAIDS reports that approximately 2.5 million people were living with HIV in India at the end of 2006. Many of those living with HIV are employed and face discrimination, stigma and a constant fear of losing their job. This problem is exacerbated by lack of information, treatment, care or support for their condition.

Project Objectives

  • Reduced HIV/AIDS risk behaviors of employees and families from targeted enterprises;
  • Reduced level of workplace discrimination against persons living with HIV/AIDS

Summary of Activities

  • Trained teachers and integrated HIV/AIDS in syllabus of the Central Board for Workers (CBW).
  • Through CBW, reached 1,689,212 workers in both the formal and informal sectors.
  • Worked with 67 enterprises, reaching 213,422 workers in over 150 locations.
  • Trained 2,076 trainers at worksites to educate fellow workers about HIV/AIDS.
  • Assisted in the development of 476 company policies on HIV/AIDS.
  • Trained 1420 union representatives and supported union projects that have reached over 8000 workers the informal economy.
  • Facilitated the endorsement of the ILO Code of Practice on HIV/AIDS and the World of Work by of the National AIDS Control Organization (NACO).
  • Worked with the Ministry of Labor and Employment to develop draft national policy on HIV/IADS and world of work pending Cabinet approval.
