Department of Labor Hosts World Day Against Child Labor Roundtable
On June 10, in commemoration of the 2009 World Day Against Child Labor, Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis hosted a roundtable discussion at the Department. Secretary Solis was joined by Senator Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), Executive Director of the White House Council on Women and Girls Tina Tchen, and ILAB Deputy Undersecretary Sandra Polaski. Roundtable participants also included representatives of non-governmental and international organizations, workers' and employers' groups, U.S. companies, and children's rights activists. The discussion focused on the theme of the 2009 World Day Against Child Labor: Give Girls a Chance and reflected participants' wide range of experience in removing children from exploitive labor, particularly girls. Secretary Solis also announced that in 2009, the Department will be providing more than $60 million for projects to address child labor globally. These programs will provide education and vocational training opportunities to child laborers and at-risk children and will help parents find viable livelihood alternatives.
