Atlanta, Georgia - The former apprenticeship
coordinator for the Asbestos Workers Local Union No. 48 Joint
Apprenticeship Training Fund in Atlanta, Georgia, pleaded guilty on March
18 to two counts of embezzling $39,957 from the fund to benefit himself,
according to the plea agreement filed in federal district court in
Atlanta. |

Tony Mancel Davis is expected to be sentenced June 2,
2003, and faces a maximum prison sentence of five years on each count and
$250,000 in fines. As part of the plea agreement, Davis agreed to make
full restitution to all victims affected by his action, pay a mandatory
special assessment of $100 and be subject to supervised release not to
exceed three years. |

A criminal information filed in the case charged Davis
with embezzling and converting to his own use $8,310 in assets from the
fund to pay for food and beverages, clothing and trips and receiving
$31,647 in illegal salary advances, duplicated salary, and overtime
payments from June 1998 to October 2001. The fund has approximately 200
participants and $56,000 in assets. |

The case was investigated by the Atlanta regional
office of the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employee Benefits Security
Administration. |
