Events and Conference Calls
Since its inception in 2001, the Center for Faith-Based and Community Initiatives has been promoting collaboration between faith-based and community organizations (FBCOs) and the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) and eliminating the barriers that prevent productive partnerships that help people enter, succeed and advance in the workforce. The Department of Labor Center for Faith-Based and Community Initiatives regularly holds events across the country, as well as a series of conference calls to better educate FBCOs on how to help those hardest to serve. Events: White House Faith-Based and Community Initiatives National Summit on Prisoner Reentry On Tuesday and Wednesday, November 27-28, the White House and the Departments of Labor and Justice will host the White House Faith-Based and Community Initiatives National Summit on Prisoner Reentry. As you know, each year more than 650,000 inmates are released from Federal and State prisons and return to their communities and families. According to the Department of Justice, more than two-thirds of returning inmates will be rearrested within three years of their release from prison. Addressing the tremendous human needs associated with recidivism requires that Federal, state, and local decision-makers partner with nongovernmental organizations — for-profit and nonprofit, faith-based and secular — to promote jobs, transitional housing, education, substance abuse treatment, positive mentoring relationships, and other valuable transitional services. President Bush has placed unprecedented priority on breaking the tragic cycle of recidivism. In announcing his Prisoner Reentry Initiative, he stated in his 2004 State of the Union Address -- "America is the land of the Second Chance, and when the gates of prison open, the path ahead should lead to a better life." Over the course of the two-day summit, experts and innovators in the field will explore together the latest data, original research, and promising models for combating recidivism and joblessness among the formerly incarcerated. This summit is part of a series of regional events the White House is hosting, along with the Departments of Education, Commerce, Agriculture, Veterans Affairs, Health & Human Services, Housing & Urban Development, and Homeland Security, the Agency for International Development, and the Small Business Administration, to support the work of effective faith-based and community organizations. The summit is free, but pre-registration is required. Registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis. Visit www.fbci.gov to register online. We strongly encourage you to register online.
