New Web Tool Helps Determine Coverage Under DOT Testing Regulations

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) recently developed a new web-based tool to help employers and employees quickly determine whether they are required to comply with its drug and alcohol testing requirements for employees in safety-sensitive positions.

To determine coverage, the tool uses a simple, decision-tree system.  Users are first prompted to identify whether they are an employer or employee and the mode of transportation in which they operate.  Based on their responses, they are then asked series of yes or no questions specific to their situation.  In the event that users are covered, the system provides the specific Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) citation and a list of relevant Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) to help them understand their rights and responsibilities under the regulations.

To use the tool, go to DOT's Office of Drug and Alcohol Policy and Compliance and select “Am I Covered.”

DOT’s drug and alcohol testing regulations affect roughly 12.1 million people and were implemented to provide a safe working environment for transportation industry workers and the traveling public.  But worker alcohol and drug use can cause serious safety hazards in all industries, not just transportation.  For more information about strategies for preventing it and helping employees with alcohol and drug problems seek help, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Working Partners for an Alcohol- and Drug-Free Workplace Web site.
