ILLICIT DRUGS AND HEAVY ALCOHOL USE,
DEPENDENCE or ABUSE
Among Full-Time Workers Aged 18-64

• Illicit Drug Use refers to the use of any of these drugs in any of the 30 days prior to the interview: marijuana or hashish, cocaine (including crack), inhalants, hallucinogens (including phencyclidine [PCP], lysergic acid diethylamide [LSD] and Ecstacy [MDMA]), heroin, or prescription-type psychotherapeutics used nonmedically, which includes stimulants, sedatives, tranquilizers and pain relievers.
• Heavy Alcohol Use is defined as drinking five or more drinks on the same occasion (i.e., at the same time or within a couple of hours of each other) on each of 5 or more days in the 30 days prior to the interview.
• Dependence or abuse is based on the definition found in the 4^th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) and applies to the 12-month period prior to the interview.
