Marriott

Drug-Free Workplace Promising Practice

Marriott, a worldwide hospitality company with more than 2,600 lodging properties across the globe, has a strong tradition of supporting programs that put education, job readiness and workplace training within the reach of all its employees. It reaches out to help potential employees who face barriers to employment, including substance abuse, through targeted programs and partnerships.

Regarding substance abuse, Marriott has a clear philosophy—that the company is committed to maintaining a safe, healthy and productive work environment for all of its associates and that the abuse of alcohol, drugs or controlled substances can adversely affect the work environment, job performance and safety of all associates and customers. Marriott also recognizes that addiction is a treatable illness and strives to assist associates with addiction to seek treatment, achieve recovery and return as productive members of its workforce.

Marriott’s drug-free workplace policy states that “the use, possession or offer to sell illegal drugs; the use or possession of prescription drugs without a valid prescription; the offer to sell prescription drugs; and the unauthorized consumption of, reporting to work, or working while under the influence of alcohol are expressly prohibited.” Specific elements of the policy then include:

  • Marriott intends to provide a safe, drug-free environment for all its associates.
  • Marriott recognizes alcohol and chemical dependencies as treatable illnesses.
  • An associate who has an alcohol or chemical dependency and requests treatment will be given one opportunity to seek professional treatment, provided no grounds for termination exist. If a personal leave of absence is requested and granted, relevant policy guidelines will apply.
  • Even though an associate may have an alcohol or chemical dependency, he or she is expected to comply with all Marriott policies and performance standards.
  • Possession or use of illegal substances may result in immediate termination and prosecution. Unauthorized possession and/or use of alcohol on the job and/or hotel property may result in disciplinary action, up to and including immediate termination.
  • When there is reasonable belief that drugs or alcohol are present in a company-supplied locker, desk or any other company-provided property, a search may be conducted.

These statements apply to all Marriott properties, but there may be additional drug-free workplace policies or practices at each establishment, including drug testing.
