Asian American Drug Abuse Program

Drug-Free Workforce Promising Practice

"The unique feature that sets AADAP apart from similar programs in the community is the agency’s proficiency of integrating drug treatment with vocational rehabilitation services. Our clients’ ability to find and remain on the job can be attributed to our coordination activities."

Asian American Drug Abuse Program

For more than 30 years, the Asian American Drug Abuse Program (AADAP), Inc. has provided substance abuse treatment and prevention and comprehensive employment and training services to residents in the Los Angeles County and City areas. While AADAP serves all ethnicities, its emphasis is on providing substance abuse treatment services to Asian and Pacific Islander communities.

AADAP is structured into five units:

  • Residential Unit: Provides long-term (12-18 months) residential substance abuse treatment for adults.
  • Outpatient Unit: Provides short-term (6-12 months) outpatient counseling, day treatment perinatal services, HIV/AIDS street outreach to active drug users, drug court treatment services, proposition 36 (community alternative sentencing) treatment services, satellite housing and on-site childcare.
  • Prevention Unit: Organizes community efforts in the South Bay area of Los Angeles to reduce the incidence of alcohol, tobacco and drug problems, provides youth violence prevention and intervention programs, youth diversion, outpatient adolescent substance abuse treatment, juvenile drug court services and mental health counseling.
  • Olympic Academy: Provides long-term residential substance abuse treatment and education services for youth.
  • Employment Access Unit: Offers specialized employment and training services primarily targeted at low-income individuals with multiple barriers to employment, especially substance abuse problems.

Substance abuse treatment and workforce development staff work closely to ensure each client’s successful transition from treatment to job placement. It is recognized that the support provided by the treatment staff is just as critical in ensuring job performance and retention as those who provide employment services. Together, these efforts help individuals recovering from addiction achieve economic self-sufficiency, confidence and greater independence.

Strategic partners in AADAP’s efforts are local employers and professionals within the criminal justice system. AADAP screens employers participating in its workforce development programs to ensure they understand and believe in the efficacy of treatment and have drug-free workplace programs in place that are supportive of people in recovery. The justice system helps AADAP reinforce the importance of court orders concerning client rehabilitation and self-sufficiency.
