Upcoming
Documentary Spotlights Drug-Free Workplace Programs and Other Key
Addiction Issues
In partnership with the Robert Wood Johnson
Foundation, the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the National
Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), HBO is launching the
ADDICTION project, an unprecedented multi-media campaign that explores
advancements in drug and alcohol addiction research, educates the public
about the disease behind addiction, and provides intimate portraits of
people affected. The project is built around an eye-opening, and
ultimately hopeful, documentary entitled ADDICTION, which premiers on
HBO on March 15 (9:00-10:30 p.m. ET/PT).
The ADDICTION project is supported by an unprecedented nationwide
community outreach campaign funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
and coordinated by Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA),
Faces and Voices of Recovery and Join Together. These organizations are
encouraging communities across the country to support the campaign by
hosting screenings of the documentary, town hall meetings and other
grass roots activities.
In hundreds of cities and towns nationwide, these
community-based events will bring together local coalitions, people in
long-term recovery and their families, elected officials, civil servants
and allied organizations to raise awareness about addiction and recovery
and promote new attitudes and policies. Individuals are encouraged to
visit the organization’s interactive Web site,
Addiction-Communities take Action
, which features a host of downloadable
organizing tools to support the project -- from house party and town
hall event planning guides, to local event calendars and
fill-in-the-blank media materials.
Drug-free workplace issues play a prominent role in the documentary,
with one portion of the film focusing on an Employee Assistance Program
(EAP) in a local union organization.
The HBO documentary will initially be offered during a free HBO preview
weekend from Thursday, March 15 to Sunday, March 18 in participating
cable systems. After that, the DVD will be available for purchase both
for personal use and for organizations to incorporate into educational
efforts. For more information on purchasing the HBO ADDICTION DVD, or
on hosting or attending a documentary screening event in your city,

Addiction-Communities take Action

Other training materials related to drug-free workplaces are available
for download from the U.S. Department of Labor’s
Working Partners for an Alcohol- and Drug-Free Workplace Web site.
