Abstract: The Employment Law Guide describes the major statutes and regulations administered by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) that affect businesses and workers. It is written in plain language and targets employers needing introductory information to develop wage, benefit, safety and health, and nondiscrimination policies for their businesses. The Guide's overview allows employers to quickly identify which requirements may apply to them. Details about each are then provided in eight chapters grouped by the following topics: Wage and Hours of Work; Safety and Health Standards; Health Benefits and Retirement Standards; Other Workplace Standards; Work Authorization for Non-U.S. Citizens; Federal Contracts: Wages, Hours of Work, and Fringe Benefits; and Specific Industries (Agriculture, Mining, Construction and Transportation). Included are explanations of covered employers, basic provisions and requirements, penalties for non-compliance, relation to state laws and other federal laws and how to get information or help. Each chapter also provides the name and telephone number of the DOL agency that administers the laws and regulations addressed in that chapter.

Copies are available in both English and Spanish. Electronic copies of the guide can be downloaded from the Internet at http://www.dol.gov/asp/programs/guide.htm. Printed copies of the guide are available by calling DOL's Toll-Free Information Service at 1-866-4-USA-DOL.

Purpose: The guide was designed to provide general information on the laws and regulations that the Department enforces. By providing clear and concise descriptions of the Departmental statutes most commonly applicable to small businesses, and by explaining how to obtain assistance from the Department for complying with them, small businesses and their workers will both be helped.

Agency Program: The office of Compliance Assistance Policy in OASP provides information and tools to the public to help them comply with DOL's laws and regulations. The ELG is one of these tools.
