What's Hot: $220M for Health Care Training
Secretary Solis visited with nursing students at the University of Kansas Medical Center on Tuesday. She announced $220 million in federal stimulus funds to train workers in health care industries.

On July 21, Secretary Solis announced a $220 million competition to fund projects that prepare workers for careers in the health care and other high growth industries. The competition announced today will result in grants to fund public entities and private nonprofit organizations to train individuals for careers in the health care fields of nursing, allied health, long-term care and health information technology.

National News: Low Wage Workers Get a Raise
The U.S. Department of Labor reminds employers and employees that the federal minimum wage will increase to $7.25 on Friday, July 24. With this change, employees who are covered by the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be entitled to pay no less than $7.25 per hour.

Recovery Highlights: Auto Communities
Dr. Ed Montgomery, the Executive Director of the White House Council on Auto Communities and Workers, announced that $25 million dollars in Recovery Act grants will be made available specifically to auto communities to train and place workers who are interested in pursuing new careers in the health care and other high growth and emerging industries.

Spotlight on States: Iowa
Working families in Iowa received welcome news from the U.S. Labor Department this week. Two National Emergency Grants, funded under the ARRA, were released to assist workers laid off at Atwood Mobile Products in West Union and the RR Donnelley print plant in Spencer. The two grants total nearly $1 million and will provide affected workers with training for careers in high-demand industries in the area.

Cabinet Rural Tour
Secretary Solis joined her cabinet counterparts from the Departments of Agriculture, Health & Human Services, and Veterans Affairs at a rural health community forum on Monday in St. John Parish, La. The goal: to share information about the federal government's efforts to rebuild and revitalize rural America. During the forum, the four cabinet members listened to local residents' perspectives and discussed solutions to the challenges facing rural communities.
