Secretary of Labor’s Opportunity EVE and EPIC Awards
Department of Labor Great Hall
Washington, D.C.
October 17, 2002

Good morning.

Greetings to everyone!

I am so disappointed that I am unable to be with you all today for this special celebration.

The EVE Award is one of the most prestigious honors recognized by the Department of Labor. This year’s winners represent the tremendous good that employers, employees and government can accomplish when they work together on behalf of the American workforce.

Let me first thank Assistant Secretary Victoria Lipnic, Deputy Assistant Secretary Charles James and the entire OFCCP staff for their on-going commitment to ensuring fairness and opportunity in the workplace.

They join me in applauding you for going the extra mile to ensure that every worker has a chance to fulfill his or her dreams, and there is equal access to opportunity for everyone.

Together, we are fulfilling President George W. Bush’s vision to make sure that no worker is left behind in the 21st century economy.

This year’s winners touch the lives of so many Americans… from workers with disabilities to single mothers to veterans and many, many more. We hope to use your programs as models in communities and workplaces all across America.

That is why this event is so important. By sharing best practices, it gives government, industry, and community groups a roadmap to successfully implement equal opportunity.

Finally, let me congratulate Qualcomm for earning the Secretary of Labor’s Opportunity Award. This honor goes to the company that has established and instituted comprehensive workforce strategies to ensure equal employment opportunity. No wonder Qualcomm is ranked one of the best places to work in America.

Again, congratulations to all of you. Thank you for being here today and for what you do everyday throughout America.

Now, I’d like to hand things back to Cam Findlay, the Deputy Secretary at the Department.

Thank you.
