Remembrance for Gary Jensen
Prepared for Delivery by
U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao
Wednesday, August 22, 2007

Thank you very much, Lola, Robbie, Amy, Dustin, Hayley, and the rest of the family for allowing us to be here today to share in this tribute to Gary.

Gary was a treasured member of the MSHA family who did not hesitate to undertake the dangerous assignment of mine rescue. Even though he had been with MSHA a relatively short time, he made a strong impression on everyone with his professionalism, courage, and dedication to the highest principles of mine safety. Their high esteem is reflected in the many MSHA colleagues here today.

Like so many of our MSHA family, Gary had an unwavering commitment to serve others and a strong bond with those who enter the mines everyday. He did not have to be asked to participate in the Crandall Canyon rescue. He put his life at risk willingly and made the ultimate sacrifice, in the hope of restoring to others their loved ones.

In the world we live in today, it is easy to lose heart because of the human weaknesses that are often on parade before us. But the sacrifices of individuals like Gary, and the other members of the rescue team, reaffirm the best in the human heart. Like the heroes of 9/11, they rushed toward danger in an act of selfless heroism to help others. Gary and all the others who put themselves at risk to serve are the true heroes of our country. They are the best our country has to offer. And they are what make our nation great.

Now, the Lord has taken Gary into his loving embrace. And we are comforted in the belief that He will not hesitate to welcome one whose last act was to follow the example of His only Son, who said that there is no greater love than to give your life for another.

May God bless and comfort you and your family. And please know that you are not alone. You are in the thoughts and prayers of all of us, who mourn with you and are inspired to rededicate ourselves to the mission of helping others by the heroic sacrifice of your beloved husband and father, Gary.

On behalf of the United States Department of Labor and a grateful nation, please allow me to present this American flag to you and your family in remembrance of Gibb's courage and heroism.
