For the State of South Carolina

Good afternoon.
Welcome to the Department of Labor’s announcement of a National
Emergency Grant to help dislocated workers in South Carolina’s
manufacturing and textile industries.
Congressman Jim DeMint of South Carolina joins us today. Thank you for
coming. I also want to acknowledge the great work of Senator Lindsey
Graham.
As President George W. Bush has said many times before, one person out
of work is one too many. This Administration remains deeply committed to
helping those most at-risk get the resources they need to find new jobs.
I know both of you share this Administration’s commitment to
getting unemployed workers in South Carolina the skills training they need to
find re-employment.
Congressman DeMint has worked tirelessly on behalf of South Carolina
families to secure these funds.
So today I am pleased to announce a National Emergency grant totaling up
to $6,438,541. This includes an initial payment of $1,895,619 to provide
employment transition assistance to approximately 1,400 dislocated workers.
These workers come from diverse regions, industries and occupations in
South Carolina. They are having some trouble finding good jobs. But with this
grant, we believe these workers are on the road to a brighter future.
That’s why we’re here today.
Through South Carolina’s workforce system, these workers will
receive the support they need to get back on their feet and into secure jobs in
high-demand industries.
That is a goal shared by Senator Graham, Congressman DeMint and this
Administration.
I am pleased to award this initial National Emergency Grant to the State
of South Carolina.
