US 1

Author: Muriel Rukeyser

Year Published: 1938

Description: US 1 is a collection of poetry by Muriel Rukeyser, a poet and political activist who devoted a lot of her writing to social issues, especially women's and workers' rights. Half of the book is dedicated to one poem in particular, "The Book of the Dead," a free-verse tribute to one of the worst industrial disasters in American history, when more than 1,000 workers, mostly African-Americans, died after being exposed to silica while building the Hawk's Nest Tunnel in Gauley Bridge, West Virginia in the early 1930s.
